Cowshed and FOR Cardiff announce Top 10 Arcade Businesses

Following a public vote by the people of Cardiff and beyond, FOR Cardiff and Cowshed have revealed the 10 most popular businesses housed in the city’s seven historic shopping arcades.

FOR Cardiff launched its campaign to establish Cardiff as the City of Arcades campaign in June asking residents and regular visitors to Cardiff to vote for their favourite stores, eateries, bars, barber shops or the hotel found within the nearly 800 metres of arcades.

Voting ended on Sunday 22 July after an overwhelming response from the public who placed 9,500 votes.

Waterloo Tea in Wyndham Arcade took the top spot, closely followed by tattooist and barber shop, Sleep When You’re Dead, in High Street Arcade, owned by MTV star Matthew Pritchard.  Other independents in the list include vegan store, Simply V, in Castle Arcade and the world’s oldest record shop, Spillers, in Morgan Arcade.

Those featured in the Top 10 will be included in the advertising of the second phase of the campaign, when it’s rolled out in Bath, Bristol and Cardiff in September. The £75k advertising campaign will include billboards, bus rears, digital screens and online advertising.

The City of Arcades Top 10 includes:

1. Waterloo Tea – teahouse, Wyndham Arcade

2. Sleep When You’re Dead – tattooist and barber shop, High Street Arcade

3. Jones the Barber – barbers, Castle Arcade

4. Pen & Paper – stationery store, Royal Arcade

5. Simply V – vegan shop and bakery, Castle Arcade

6. Sobeys – vintage clothing store, Royal Arcade

7. Jian Chen Fine Art – art gallery, Duke Street Arcade

8. Spillers – record shop, Morgan Arcade

9. Rules of Play – table top games shop, Castle Arcade

10. The Card Shop – Dominions Arcade

Adrian Field, Executive Director of FOR Cardiff who funded the campaign said: “Our vision is to transform Cardiff city centre into a more welcoming, vibrant and influential place. With high streets across the UK facing an uncertain time, we want to do as much as we can to help Cardiff thrive as a shopping destination in this challenging climate. We created this campaign to put Cardiff firmly on the independent shopping map and encourage more people to visit, giving the local economy a boost.

“The number of votes cast and positive support for the campaign demonstrates how much the people of Cardiff and visitors to the city value what the arcades and the independent businesses bring to the city.

“Well done to everyone who made the list and a big thank you to all those that took the time to vote. We’re looking forward to working with the businesses featured in the Top 10 and using their stories to inform the second phase of the advertising campaign.”

Kasim Ali, owner of Waterloo Tea in Wyndham Arcade, said: “It’s such a proud moment for all of us at Waterloo Tea to not only be recognised for what we do, but also to be a part of reinvigorating and championing the uniqueness of our beautiful city.”

Matthew Pritchard, owner of SWYD, entrepreneur and MTV star, said: “I’m really proud and honoured that Sleep When You’re Dead has been included in the City of Arcades Top 10. It’s down to my amazing team, who work so hard. Since the campaign started, we’ve had some of our busiest weekends and we’d like to thank FOR Cardiff for starting this. We love being in the arcades and our future is definitely here as we continue to grow our business.”
