Contactless giving a success in Cardiff

More than 500 people from Cardiff and beyond have joined the fight against homelessness by donating to Give DIFFerently, a fundraising initiative to help frontline services combat rough sleeping across the city.

Over three weeks in March, Cardiff’s residents and visitors embraced the innovative contactless donation point situated on the Hayes, donating day and night with the tap of a card. The pay point, fronted by Cardiff Blues’ Sam Warburton, was on the Hayes from March 12 – April 3.

As well as the contactless technology, people have been giving what they wish via text to donate.

The trial initiative received 502 donations and following the successful response, funders of the campaign, FOR Cardiff, are considering rolling out further technology later in the year.

Discussions are also taking place to engage businesses and public further through a Homelessness Charter in Cardiff, brought together by the organisations working directly to eradicate homelessness in the city.

Adrian Field, Executive Director of FOR Cardiff, the city’s business improvement district, said: “We are delighted to see that the trial of this type of giving has been so well received in Cardiff. It is imperative to us that we invest in the longevity of the campaign. We are looking to work with local businesses to facilitate other contactless pay points and methods of alternative giving around the city.”

Managed by the Community Foundation in Wales, voluntary and third sector organisations can apply for grants from the Give DIFFerently fund from between £250 and £750. Grants will be allocated to help individuals who need it the most with 10% of the fund ring-fenced for organisations working with those at risk of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Adrian added: “For anyone who missed the opportunity to donate by contactless card, you can continue to donate anytime via text. Your donations will help us come together to tackle homelessness. We are already seeing applications coming in for the fund and will be making grants very soon.”
